Mask Painting

Masks are an integral part of various religious and cultural rituals. The Newari community of Kathmandu valley have been practicing mask making and painting for centuries. The masks are adorned with vibrant colors, intricate designs, and sometimes even with semi-precious stones representing deities, demons, and mythical creatures and are paraded through the streets.

Paint traditional masks inspired by Newari festivals and cultural rituals.

In this workshop, you’ll explore the symbolism behind these masks before painting your own under the guidance of local artisans.

Your day begins with an introduction to the art of mask-making with a brief history of the craft, its cultural significance, and the techniques involved. The artisans will guide you to use the color palette and the significance behind various colours used to decorate the mask. You’ll also learn about the intricate patterns, motifs, and symbols used in mask painting. Finally you will add finishing touches to your mask.
